Terminology

  • Department of the Attorney General (WA), Equality Before the Law: Bench Book (2009).
In the chapter on family and domestic violence, it is acknowledged that ‘[t]he terminology in this area is rarely used consistently’ and that law reform commissions often choose a descriptor and then qualify the term with a list of relationships and behaviours that the term encompasses. This bench book adopts a similar approach, and although the term ‘family and domestic violence’ is used throughout, the authors do not attempt to explain why this term is preferred over other more commonly used terms (pp562-563).
